Overcoming the Significant SaaS Challenges

SaaS Challenges 2024

Overcoming the Top SaaS Challenges

Nowadays, SaaS companies encounter a myriad of SaaS challenges. From IT development to user traffic and conversion rates, these hurdles are ever-present as companies strive to enhance their market presence, boost revenue, and expand their customer base. Given the current global economic conditions, these challenges are more pronounced than ever, including high interest rates and inflation. Product and IT teams must intensify their efforts to maintain user engagement and drive revenue growth. A consistent and well-defined product development process is crucial for mobile and web applications.

As a professional overseeing client management, sales, and marketing at Mobile Reality - the Polish custom software development company, I've observed numerous cases with prospects, as well as with our past and present customers. I have witnessed various digital product development journeys, including successes and setbacks. As a co-founder of NFT Reality Kudos App, I face these challenges and can empathize with the issues our business partners encounter. In this article, I will outline four primary SaaS development challenges in 2024 that many companies offering services through mobile and web applications are grappling with.

Traffic Issues in SaaS Companies

Potential Causes for Low User Traffic

Despite completing product design workshops and investing in the digital product management process, including mobile and web development, traffic to the web application or mobile app remains insufficient. This can hinder reaching the break-even point or achieving significant traction and revenue generation. Several factors could contribute to low traffic, including:

  • Non-SEO-friendly marketing website,

  • Insufficient or improper keyword usage in content,

  • Lack of quality content impacting organic search rankings,

  • Inadequate marketing activities,

  • Poor market presence.

Possible Solutions for Higher User Traffic

To address these SaaS challenges:

  • SEO Audit: Utilize tools like SEranking, SEMrush, or Google's free audit tools to evaluate your website's SEO performance. These audits can highlight areas for improvement, such as proper headers, page titles, or meta descriptions. To learn more about great SaaS SEO tools, check out our other article on this topic, available under the following link.

  • SEO Services: Consider hiring an SEO specialist or agency to enhance your website's search engine visibility. This investment can be crucial in a competitive digital landscape.

SEO topics and issues can be solved in the following ways:

  • SEO audit:

it is good to check SEO quality with some 3rd party tools like SEranking, SEMrush, or free audit tools provided by Google. These tools allow you to scan your website and check all SEO metrics that need to be improved or fixed. The SEO audits are really helpful and are allowing you to improve your page a lot. Generated SEO reports include different aspects like proper headers, lacking page titles, or descriptions, and many more.

  • SEO services and external agency or freelancer:

on the other hand, is always good to consider hiring an SEO specialist or finding an agency that will provide you with SEO services and SEO expertise. Finding the proper ones is always the challenge, but what is not a challenge these days?

Regarding the content of your marketing website:

  • Articles and blog posts:

The easiest way to start writing. If you are not willing to invest in a content marketing specialist, just start writing by yourself. At the beginning, do your research with a keyword planner about what keywords and phrases are trending in your target groups and what topics related to your product may be interesting for your target audience. When the topic is chosen, start writing. When an article is done, make the content assessment with some external tools that may correct some aspects and suggest some changes to boost the SEO of your blog post to be treated well by Google algorithms.

  • Content marketing services and external agency or freelancer:

On the other hand, you can hire a writer who will be creating articles or blog posts on topics that will interest your audience and potential Clients. If not hiring full-time, you can always outsource writing a single article or a couple of them to some freelancer for a marketing agency.

Lack of marketing activities and poor market presence are combined. We can not have a great market presence without marketing activities. By marketing activities, I don't have in mind paid campaigns that cost a lot, but starting from a simple presence on all portals, websites that aggregate the digital products like web applications or mobile applications, that provide a listing, rankings of such digital product based on categories, features, etc. We have plenty of such websites as G2.com and Clutch.co. As result we should achieve one consistent profile of our product on different sites, which could redirect traffic to our website, mobile page, or a site on an app marketplace (iOS App Store, Android Google Play, HUAWEI AppGallery). Later on, we should consider guest posting on different channels, which is connected to content marketing. Then next steps can be really various, but we do not have to spend thousands of dollars on marketing to increase traffic. Organic traffic requires work, and time and it is no easy to boost, but it is achiveable.

Conversion

Possible Reasons for Low Conversion Rates

Even after completing digital product development and implementing robust product development strategies, SaaS companies often face sales challenges with low conversion rates. Despite achieving adequate traffic on your website and observing a decent number of visitors and user sessions, the conversion rate from visitors to app users may still fall short. This issue could stem from an unoptimized user journey on your website, leading to potential customers quickly abandoning your product offering.

Another critical factor could be the onboarding process. If the onboarding is too complex, lengthy, or not intuitive, users may become frustrated and leave before fully engaging with the app. A cumbersome onboarding process can be a significant barrier to conversion, as users often seek quick and straightforward access to the service.

Possible Solutions to Increase Conversion Rates

To address these conversion challenges, start by gathering and analyzing user feedback:

  • User Feedback: Check what users are saying about your web app or mobile application. Reviews and opinions can provide valuable insights into areas that need improvement or changes to enhance customer satisfaction. This feedback can highlight specific issues that may be causing users to leave your site without converting.

  • Data Analysis: Leverage tools like Google Analytics to track and report on user activities within your web application or mobile app. This data can reveal which features or modules are underutilized, indicating potential frustration points for users. Identifying these areas can help in refining the user experience and addressing conversion challenges.

  • User Behavior Analysis: Utilize tools like Hotjar to analyze video recordings of user interactions. By observing real user behavior across different devices and browsers, you can identify where users are dropping off and why. This detailed insight can inform necessary changes to the user interface or user experience, making the conversion process smoother.

  • Optimizing the Onboarding Process: Streamline the onboarding process to ensure it is user-friendly and efficient. Simplify account setup, reduce the number of steps required, and provide clear guidance throughout. Consider implementing interactive tutorials or tooltips that guide users through key features without overwhelming them. A smoother onboarding process can significantly enhance the initial user experience, leading to higher conversion rates.

As a result, SaaS companies may need to revisit and potentially expand the app development process. This could involve reorganizing the product, implementing new features or modules, and addressing specific SaaS development challenges. These enhancements aim to attract potential customers, keep them engaged within the app, and ultimately convert them into paying users. While this may impact app development costs in the long term, the investment can lead to better user retention and increased revenue.

Customer Retention

The Importance of Customer Retention in SaaS Businesses

After successfully driving traffic and converting visitors into users, the next critical challenge for SaaS companies is customer retention. Retaining existing customers is crucial for sustainable growth and profitability, as it often costs less to retain a customer than to acquire a new one. Moreover, loyal customers are more likely to provide valuable feedback, refer new users, and upgrade their subscriptions, all of which contribute to the long-term success of a SaaS business.

Common Customer Retention Challenges

Despite the clear benefits, many SaaS businesses struggle with retaining customers. Several factors can contribute to customer churn, including:

  1. Insufficient Customer Support: Poor customer support in SaaS platforms can lead to frustration and dissatisfaction, prompting users to switch to competitors with better service.

  2. Lack of Continuous Value: If users do not see ongoing value from your SaaS, they may not justify the recurring cost and will seek alternatives.

  3. Complex User Experience: A complex or unintuitive user experience can deter users from fully engaging with the product, leading to higher churn rates.

  4. Inadequate Communication: Failing to communicate effectively with customers about new features, updates, or benefits can result in users feeling disconnected from the product and company.

Strategies for Enhancing Customer Retention

To address these customer retention challenges, SaaS provider can implement the following strategies:

  1. Enhance Customer Support: Offering excellent customer support is vital. This can include providing multiple support channels (e.g., live chat, email, phone support), offering self-help resources like knowledge bases and FAQs, and ensuring quick and helpful responses to customer inquiries.

  2. Deliver Continuous Value: Regularly update your SaaS product with new features, improvements, and integrations that address the evolving needs of your users. Highlight the value of these updates through marketing campaigns, in-app notifications, or newsletters.

  3. Optimize User Experience: Simplify and streamline the user experience to ensure that customers can easily access and utilize the features that matter most to them. Conduct usability testing and gather user feedback to identify pain points and make necessary adjustments.

  4. Engage in Proactive Communication: Maintain regular communication with your customers through various channels. This can include sending out product update emails, hosting webinars, or creating engaging content that educates users about the full capabilities of your product.

  5. Implement a Customer Success Program: A customer success team can proactively engage with users to ensure they are getting the most out of your product. This team can provide personalized onboarding, training sessions, and ongoing support to help users achieve their goals with your software.

  6. Offer Loyalty Programs and Incentives: Reward loyal customers with discounts, exclusive features, or early access to new updates. This not only enhances customer satisfaction but also incentivizes continued use of your product.

By focusing on customer retention, SaaS platform can build a more stable revenue base, reduce churn, and foster a community of loyal users who advocate for the product. This strategic focus on retaining customers complements efforts in traffic generation and conversion, creating a comprehensive approach to achieving long-term business success.

SaaS Development Pivot

Possible Reasons Why a Pivot is Necessary

In the dynamic SaaS industry, it's not uncommon for services offered through a mobile app or web platform to face challenges in attracting a sufficient user base. This situation often arises when customers request features or services not initially considered. Our analysis and customer reviews and feedback often highlight the need for additional features, modules, or significant changes to increase user engagement and traction. The minimum viable product (MVP) stage frequently reveals whether a pivot or reorganization is necessary to align better with market demands and customer expectations.

Personal Experience with the NFT Reality Digital Product Development Process

As co-founder of NFT Reality, along with my brother (co-founder), I am currently navigating this exact scenario. After releasing the MVP, we engaged in weeks of consultations, demos, and discussions with potential investors. It became clear that our initial product offering wasn't sufficient. We realized that a substantial pivot was needed, involving a strategic shift and implementing new features that would drive traffic, convert visitors into app users, and ultimately increase subscriptions and revenue.

A Possible Way to Deal with Pivot in SaaS Companies

Addressing these SaaS development challenges often requires a fresh start in product development. While this approach inevitably leads to additional app development costs, it is sometimes the only viable path forward. Whether developing a mobile application or a web app, the fundamental process remains consistent; only the composition of the development team differs. To accelerate this process, expanding the app development team may be necessary by including new mobile developers, web developers, UX/UI designers, and QA testers. This expansion can facilitate the rapid deployment of new features and modules.

Effective project management and product ownership are critical in this phase to ensure efficient resource use and avoid unnecessary expenses. Clearly defined goals and requirements are essential for maintaining focus and preventing team burnout. Managing the team effectively is challenging but crucial to preventing chaos and ensuring smooth operations.

If expanding your internal IT team is not feasible or you are looking for a cost-effective solution without a long-term commitment, consider partnering with a software agency like Mobile Reality. Agencies specializing in SaaS solutions can quickly initiate a new project, whether it's a web app development or a mobile app development process. Their expertise and experience enable them to deliver a new version of the mobile or web app or develop new modules efficiently. Software agencies offer flexibility and can tailor their services to your specific needs, combining mobile app and web development services as required. This option is particularly advantageous for SaaS businesses that do not want to invest heavily in a permanent IT team but still require high-quality development work.

In summary, while pivoting involves significant challenges, including potential integration challenges and increased app development costs, it can lead to a more robust and competitive product. It's crucial to remain agile and responsive to market feedback, ensuring that your product evolves to meet the needs of your target audience.

Velocity of IT development

What Causes This Issue

As a tech specialist, you may be familiar with the scenario where the business team pressures the tech team to accelerate the development process and deliver specific features as soon as possible. This situation is common among mobile and web developers, especially when the business team requests an advanced mobile app or web application, which was originally estimated to take several weeks to complete. The challenge lies in maintaining the quality of the development process while ensuring that the user experience remains high.

Possible Solutions to Speed Up the IT Development Process

One of the most promising SaaS solutions to address this challenge is using artificial intelligence (AI). The advancements in AI, particularly with technologies like ChatbotGPT and tools developed by OpenAI, have opened up new avenues for speeding up mobile app development and web development processes. In Mobile Reality, we have begun exploring how AI can be integrated into our workflows to enhance development efficiency. Research and industry opinions suggest that AI can generate over 40% of the code, a significant increase from previous capabilities of around 20%. This improvement offers a valuable opportunity to combine AI-driven automated code generation with human oversight to accelerate the development timeline.

Tools like GitHub Copilot and Tabnine are examples of how AI can assist developers by suggesting code snippets, automating repetitive tasks, and reducing the overall time spent on coding. These tools can significantly speed up the development process, allowing the tech team to meet tight deadlines without compromising quality.

Another viable option is to extend your development team temporarily. While hiring new team members may not always be feasible due to time constraints and the effort required, leveraging external expertise can be a practical solution. Consider hiring mobile developers, web developers, UX/UI designers, or QA specialists from software agencies like Mobile Reality or any other agency that aligns with your technology stack. This flexible approach allows you to scale your team according to project demands and ensures you have the necessary skills to deliver the project efficiently.

Alternatively, working with freelancers from platforms like Upwork or Freelancer.com can also be a solution, although it comes with risks. Agency developers are typically vetted and dedicated to your project during regular work hours, offering a more reliable option compared to freelancers who may have other commitments.

Choosing a solution that aligns with your project requirements and deadlines is essential while ensuring that the development process remains smooth and efficient. Whether integrating AI tools, extending your team, or working with freelancers, each option offers unique benefits that can help overcome the key challenges of accelerating IT development in the SaaS sector.
